ADHD/ADD Coaching: Time Management tips for students

ADHD/ADD and Time Management tips

  • Create to-do list for the next day every night
  • Do a weekly version before the week begins
  • Write all appointment times for doing course work using the calendar or planner. Including leisure activities and household chores
  • Check the planner AT THE SAME TIME every day to see what needs to be done
  • Set Alarm reminders for scheduled activities, class times, study time, and personal appointments
  • Have a timer beep every hour to get a sense of the clock
  • Break down all tasks into doable chunks on a master calendar, white board, etc

ADHD/ADD and Personal Organization tips

  • Label Everything. Color code and delegate a color for specific subjects (The calendar provided works great for this)
  • Do a daily maintenance. Pick up all loose items to eliminate as much clutter and maintain order so that the mess doesn’t bombard you and have a negative emotional affect
  • Give each item it’s own default “home”
  • Avoid Overload. Do you need every sheet of paper in your binder?

Working Memory

Take as much pressure “off your brain” in order to remember things without having to think about it.
  • Use an audio recording to remember things
  • When doing work, set time aside (the beginning works well) to review previous material20-30 minute review sessions work better than the last minute CRAMMING
  • Take notes as you go rather than waiting until after the factUse “post its,” “bunny ears,” or anything other means to mark the important material
  • When reading, the more senses that are involved, the better then chance for memory retention.

Mayer Hoffer, M.D. B.Sc. (MED), F.R.C.P., DIP CH PSYCH., D.A.B.P.N.,Medical Director, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist whose extensive experience crosses all ages. He is a nationally recognized expert in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. He has been in private practice since 1983. Dr. Hoffer is highly regarded for his early and innovative approaches for results-oriented outcomes in ADHD treatment. He is a regular presenter to health care professionals and families regarding the advances in the understanding and treatment of ADHD.

Ruth Baruch, M.D., B.Sc., F.R.C.P., Associate Medical Director, is an adult psychiatrist and Medical Director of the Community Mental Health Programs in the Dept. of Psychiatry at Toronto East General Hospital. She also maintains a private practice and focuses on mood and anxiety disorders, adult ADHD, treatment resistant depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and gender differences in psychiatric disorders. The main focus of her teaching is psychopharmacology choosing appropriate treatment for patients based on clinical knowledge, research and practice guidelines.

Judy Patteson, M.A.Sc., C.Psych.Assoc., has over 30 years’ experience working in the field of school psychology, in both school board and private practice settings. Utilizing her significant knowledge of differential diagnosis and case management, Judy has worked with youngsters from preschool to college, clarifying their learning profile and identifying issues that may interfere with their ability to achieve their potential.

Susie Levitsky, BSc, Reg OT, is an Occupational Therapist with over 24 years of experience working with clients to improve their ability to function on a daily basis.  Susie has worked with individuals limited by physical, mental, emotional and behavioural barriers. Susie uses a cognitive therapy approach to assist clients to challenge their thoughts in order to change behaviours that may be negatively affecting their lives.  By working with individuals and groups, Susie has given clients the opportunities to change how they live, by teaching them new skills.

Linda Perlis, LLB, MSW, RSW, has extensive clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and young adults with a wide range of emotional, social and behavioural concerns. She provides support to her clients through education, play therapy and psychotherapy.  Her background in social work, divorce and children’s law, and as a legal policy analyst with the Ontario Government on social justice and health law issues, gives her a broad and unique understanding of the complex dynamics involved in systems such as school settings as well as family and child interactions.

Debbie Levy, Child Resource Consultant, Hons BA & MA (Psychology)
Debbie works with clients to help bridge the gap between psycho-educational/psychological assessments and the prioritization and identification of resources to best assist families and the individual child or adult. She provides clients with information and options to help them choose the most appropriate program or professional to suit their needs. Debbie is continuously working towards building networks and professional relationships required to optimize client treatment.

Leanne Matlow, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (Children), BA, OTC, MA, Professional Colleague of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy
Leanne Matlow has spent her entire career working with children. Through her teaching experience and roles as a Special Education Resource teacher, guidance counselor and workshop facilitator, Leanne extended that passion into completing her study in Cognitive Behavior Therapy. She is passionate in her work with parents, teachers and young people to build awareness of their thoughts and how they relate to their behaviors. Her areas of expertise include working with individuals with anxiety and attention deficit disorder.

Susan Leopold, Creativity Arts Therapist, BFA, MA, (currently completing MA in Creative Arts Therapy & Creativity Development at Pratt U)
Susan has a strong background in creative expression (an award winning illustrator and visual artist and OCAD University instructor/guest lecturer) who became interested in its therapeutic benefit for children, adolescents and adult clients. Gaining her clinical training at Toronto General Hospital and the Hincks Dellcrest Centre, she has worked with clients affected by ADHD using a variety of creative approaches including art, play, sand play and music to encourage their concentration and focus while nurturing their self-expression and self-esteem.

Ari Petroff, Certified ADD Coach (ADD Coaching Academy, US), has been involved in coaching of adults and students since 2006.  Ari has a personal knowledge of ADHD, being diagnosed with it in 2002. Since achieving his accreditation he has continued to build his practice ranging from adults needing help, to coaching university students from Seneca, Ryerson, York U and McGill.  Ari talks to various groups to help explain ADHD and identify where coaching can help individuals to achieve their personal goals.

Robin Storfer, MSW, ACPC, ACC, is a Certified Professional Coach specializing in supporting families impacted by ADHD.   Since Robin’s son was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age, it has been her passion to coach, educate, and empower families in order to help the family unit thrive.  Robin combines her Social Work background and coaching skills with her enthusiasm about ADHD education/knowledge to bring a personalized approach to every client’s experience. Robin also has a keen interest in providing workshops that help families understand ways in which they can work together and ways they can work within their school and community environment.

Jason Froats, Hons BA, ACC, Performance Coach
Jason identifies himself as a performance coach - specializing in helping young adolescents(15+) and adults effectively manage their ADHD and co related disorders (such as general/social anxiety, OCD and Tourettes) He focuses on helping clients achieve improved performance and success in school and work, serving clients internationally, across the United States and Canada in both English and French. Jason helps clients gain better awareness of their often overlooked strengths and how ADHD specifically affects them. Having ADD himself, Jason intimately understands the challenges both students and professional can face in their lives, school and careers. Jason received his coaching accreditation from CoachU and is an graduate of the ADHD specialized coach training from JST Coaching LLC and is actively a practicing coach with the Edge Foundation.

Kate Leinweber, B.Sc, RHN, Microbiologist and Registered Holistic Nutritionist has been working in the field of nutrition for over 6 years.  Kate’s background in microbiology and immunology has provided her with the skills to understand the complex interaction of food, nourishment and well-being.  Her expertise helps her to assist clients in achieving their optimal nutritional goals.

Howard L Rudner, M.D., B. Sc. M Ed., Ph.D. (Counselling and School Psychology), FCFP, is a community family physician with extensive experience in education and psychology. In addition to his family practice, he plays an active role as staff, Department of Family and Community Medicine at both Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and North York General Hospital and is an Associate Staff member with the University Health Network. Dr Rudner is also an Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.

Adele Sherman, Educational Therapist, BA (Psych), M.Ed. (Learning Disabilities), Neuro-Developmental Delay Therapist, has been active in the education field for over thirty years.  As an Educational Therapist, she works to identify and address the core issues as to why a student is struggling.  Her comprehensive, individualized approach to learning helps children, teens and adults overcome their particular learning challenges in order to succeed in school and life.

Mary Catherine LaForest,Tutor
Mary Catherine has been involved in working with children for over 6 years. Her experience includes working with children and young students with special needs and this past year has put her directly in the classroom environment. Her particular area of tutoring is working with children aged 5 – 8 in the areas of reading, comprehension and math for which she has a special passion. In addition, Mary Catherine works with children who also need fine motor skills development.

Rana Gupta, B.Sc, B.Ed, MA SLP, CCC-SLP, S-LP(C), Reg CASLPO, Speech-Language Pathologist, is an experienced speech and language therapist.  Her experience has spanned hospital, education, community and private settings.  Combining knowledge, experience and an approachable style, Rana is dedicated to making a difference in the development of speech, language or reading development for the child. Rana encourages team and parental support during the therapy process and tries to create a positive learning experience for the child by making it fun and relevant to their needs.

Karen Auslander – Co-Founder
Karen has 25+ years of business experience within the global healthcare and consumer communications areas with her areas of expertise in strategy, marketing and management. She previously served as the President of one of Canada’s largest health care focused strategic and marketing firms which gave her great insight into the health care sector at many levels both in Canada and globally.  Karen’s broad health care experience covers multiple therapeutic areas, various stakeholder groups and the health and wellness industry in general.  Karen is responsible for the overall management, communication and day-to-day operations in the centre.

Susan Feldman - Co-Founder, Hon BA Psychology, B. Ed.
With a foundation in psychology, and a background in education,  Susan entered the business world involved in gathering customer knowledge and understanding  in the financial, consumer goods and health care sector.  With over 25 years of experience, Susan’s business career had her exposed to many health care areas with a particular focus on mental health issues including schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, anxiety, and  ADHD. Tips & Strategies while at School

  • Treat school as your daily job (8hrs)
  • Set routines
  • Use pill boxes to remember Meds
  • Leave extra time for planning
  • Set boundaries
  • Keep it organized - Use files, cabinets, alarms, gadgets, computers, etc.
  • Help assist working memory by taking pressure off your brain
  • Embrace and cater to your own learning style
  • Use a reward system for a job well done

Other Strategies for Consideration

  • Find others who have ADHD at the school
  • Join a support group for students with ADHD
  • Sit at the front of the classroom
  • Get a Note taker, or find a note taking service.
  • Find out if you can get transcripts from lectures
  • Break down all tasks into doable chunks
  • Find friends who are “academically” oriented rather than “socially” orientated

Connect to why you’re at school. If you know what you want to do afterward, then your course of action can be catered towards your end goal. Those who aren’t connected to an outcome tend to be the ones who struggle more.

ADHD Coaching - What is it all about?

Coaching for ADD/ADHD involves tackling issues with Executive function -- an area of much concern for ADD'ers. Ari Petroff, our ADHD/ADD coach, presents this document to explain more.

"A child or an adult with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD) might be hyperactive, inattentive, and/or impulsive. Clinicians have always understood hyperactivity and impulsivity. The understanding of inattention, though, has shifted from primarily “the inability to stay on task” to a broader concept called executive function disorder (EFD), which involves a pattern of chronic difficulties in executing daily tasks." -- ADDitude Magazine

Executive function is often difficult to understand. There are differing definitions and many component parts. A person can have one or more of the functions not working correctly. This is called Executive Dysfunction (EDF). The following are definitions and examples of the component parts of EDF.
  • Goal Setting refers to the ability to set goals that are realistic and attainable. Example: Wanting to play many sports but realizing that it is important to set a successful goal and choosing one per season.
  • Initiating involves starting a boring job. When you love something, your chemistry changes to allow for easy starting. It is only difficult to start the jobs that are not intrinsically interesting. Example: Learning what makes starting homework easier, e.g., promising a reward such as playing an electronic game afterwards.
  • Prioritizing is understanding the relative importance of all the items within a group. Example: Deciding to do homework even when playing an electronic game is more fun.
  • Pacing is the ability to establish and adjust rate of work so that the goal is met by specified completion time or date. Pacing is using your awareness of time to control your actions. Example: Knowing how long it takes to do your homework.
  • Planning is the ability to break down the process of accomplishing a goal into efficient steps that can fit into your daily schedule. Example: Being able to break down a long-term project into individual homework assignments.
  • Sequencing is understanding the relative order of things. It is knowing the order of the steps needed to accomplish a task Example: Putting ideas in order for a book report or term paper.
  • Organizing is the ability to arrange items in an efficient and easily retrievable manner. Example: Organizing is the ability to keep bookbag organized.
  • Shifting Flexibly is the ability to change from one activity or idea to another with ease. Example: Being able to easily put away books from one subject and shift to the next subject without any difficulty.
  • Using Feedback is being aware of your impact on the environment and using that information to alter your behavior. Example: Noticing people staring when you stand to close and moving back.
  • Inhibiting is the ability to know that you need to inhibit. ADHD frequently imitates this but the ADHD person without EDF is aware that they are not able to inhibit. Example: Being aware of the need to raise your hand before speaking in class.
  • Self –Monitoring is the ability to maintain awareness of yourself in your environment. Example: Knowing how loud to speak when in class.
  • Executing is completing all the details necessary to finish a job. Example: Finishing your project and handing it in.

Tips and Tricks

  • Know what you do not know, e.g. what EDF is and how it impacts you.
  • Become self-aware.
  • Learn to talk to yourself about what is going on around you
  • Get a notebook and write down what the problems are that interfere with your life.
  • Choose the most important thing to work on by what is the most serious problem.
  • Get a clue when you are not clear what to do.
  • Next time you make a mistake, find someone to help you understand why.
  • Problem solving is a difficult task for people with EDF.
  • Have an assortment of people available to give you strategies.
  • Remember that if nothing changes, nothing changes. This takes work!
  • Go to an ADHD coach when you are stuck and cannot figure out what to do.

Coaching for ADHD/ADD at ADDvance Treatment Centres

Coaching is a process that involves a dialogue between coach and client aimed at creating self-awareness and development of the client in a supportive and trusting environment. Our Coaches partner with clients to help them achieve their goals, establish what is important to them, clarify their values and then co-create strategies and skills to achieve them. Coaching is individualized and action-based, allowing the client to build productive habits and systems.
ADD Coaches have the added experience and understanding of ADHD – how it presents, the impact on self-esteem and beliefs and the challenges this can create for clients.
Having a Coach is like having a dance partner – someone to share the floor with you – you still lead, but you feel confident that you have unconditional support as you move forward step by step.

A successful coaching relationship involves 3 core components:

  • Partnership – The client identifies for the coach the areas he/she needs help in addressing.
  • Structure – The coach and client should establish structures that work with the clients strengths.
  • Process – Discussions between coach and client should be about creating solutions – not exploring or assigning blame

Coaching is NOT...

Coaching is not therapy. It is not about exploring the background or history and getting to the root of a problem. It is about finding language, strategies and skills to move forward. To face the daily challenges with a sense of understanding and a plan of action to address them in your own unique way. Coaching is focused on the future and creating solutions.

Nutrition tips for clients with ADHD/ADD to keep in mind when heading over to Grocery stores

When shopping stick to the outsides of the store hitting just the produce, dairy, meat, & bakery sections. This will ensure that the majority of your diet is based in whole foods. Anything with a shelf life usually has an additive that can inhibit brain function or actually cause damage; those with ADHD are especially sensitive to these. Here is what our ADHD/ADD Nutritionist Kate Leinweber has to say:

    • Be an informed Shopper -- The first step in taking control of your health is to gain an understanding of what is in the food you eat. Become a savvy label reader by keeping an eye out for the following ingredients.

    • Brain Damaging Fats: Hydrogenated, Vegetable Oils (Canola, Corn, Sunflower, Safflower) -- These fats are known to displace the healthy fats in the brain and prevent the formation of crucial fats like DHA and EPA.

    • Colourings: allura Red AC, Sunset yellow FCF, orange yellow S, Tartrazine, Stannour chloride -- These additives vary from neurotoxins, carcinogenic or can cause allergic reactions.

    • Flavour Enhancers: “Flavour”, Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), Saccharin, Sugar, Anything ending in –ose, Aspartame -- Flavour enhancers are added to foods that are processed and would not taste good otherwise. They can desensitize taste buds making whole foods taste bland. Not to worry! With a shift to whole foods the sensitivity of taste buds will normalize.

    •  Preservatives: Benzoic Acid, Butylated Hyroxyanisole (BHA), Calcium or Potassium Benzoate, Sulfate, Sulfite, Nitrate, Nitrite, Propyl p-hydroxybenzoate, propylparaben, paraben, Stannous chloride, Sulfur dioxide -- These preservatives have been known to inhibit digestion, be carcinogenic, cause chronic skin issues, or even reduce the body’s ability to carry oxygen in the blood.

ADD/ADHD Nutrition Tips for Kick Starting Your Day!

Here are some Breakfast ideas from our ADD/ADHD nutritionist, Kate Leinweber

The 5 Minute Breakfast Fix
Smoothies are a quick breakfast and easily pack in nutrient dense foods to start your day off right. Choose from the list below and create your own. In each smoothie include at least two fruits, one protein source, and one healthy oil.
  • Fruit - Banana, Mango, Mixed Berries, Apple, Pear, Melon
  • Protein - ½ cup Plain Yogurt, 1 tbsp Nut Butter
  • Healthy Oils - ½ an avocado, ¼ cup shredded Coconut, 1 tbsp Flax seeds, 1 tbsp Hemp seeds
Place into a blender and add Unsweetened Nut Milk, Whole Milk or Water to blend well.

The Sit down Breakfast
Classic Eggs on Toast. Eggs are a high quality protein source as well as they provide phospholipids which the brain needs to function. Enjoy Eggs on Whole grain Toast. Variations on cooking.
  • Basted Egg: Melt butter in a pan on medium heat. Crack eggs in and add a splash of water. Cover and leave for ~3 minutes or until the white is cooked, but the yolk still runny. The butter and water combination protects the yolk from the hot cooking surface. Use sea salt and pepper to taste.
  • Scrambled: Melt butter in a pan on medium-low heat. Crack eggs into a bowl and whisk with some sea salt and pepper to taste. Pour into pan and stir with a spatula until cooked. The low heat and slow cooking keeps the nutrients intact.

Breakfast on the Run
These travel well so you can eat your breakfast on the commute, or in the first few minutes of class.
  • Whole Grain Toast with Nut butter, and a banana.
  • Banana with a handful of nuts.
  • Whole Plain Yogurt with fruit & honey.
Tip: Make your breakfast the night before. In the morning just grab it from the fridge and go
